obesidad morbida

Curious fact: Patients with morbid obesity are more likely to die 12 to 15 years earlier than a person with a healthy weight.

The United States is the country with the highest percentage of obesity, since 40% of the American population suffers from this health condition. If this figure doesn’t surprise you, hearing that about 133 million Americans have excess body fat may explain why it’s important to address this issue. This week marks National Obesity Awareness Week, a week in which we raise awareness about obesity and its risks, but above all, how we can prevent it.

What is obesity?

Obesity is a very serious health condition, which is characterized by an excess of body fat, a situation that can put the health of anyone suffering from it at serious risk, as it increases the probabilities of having diseases, various health problems, and various complications, which will be addressed later.

The cause behind obesity is a higher caloric intake than is burned throughout the day because the calories that we ingest through food and drinks, and that we don’t burn, end up being stored in the body and converted into fat; this goes hand in hand with eating habits and sedentary lifestyle.

It is important to know what is behind obesity, especially in a country like the United States, where most of our diet consists of foods and drinks with a lot of calories, and where we burn very few of them because most of our daily activities do not require much physical effort. By knowing what is behind this health problem, we can learn to recognize when our habits are putting us at risk, and thus be able to prevent health problems.

Risk factors

Another very important aspect to which we must pay close attention are the risk factors, and everything that puts us at greater risk of suffering from obesity:
  • Family Inheritance: Obesity is a health condition in which genetics play a big role, because, in part, genes are responsible for the way in which we store and distribute our fat, how much appetite we have, and how we burn calories.
  • Unhealthy habits: This includes an unbalanced diet high in calories and carbohydrates, and large portions; another important point is the consumption of high-calorie drinks, such as soft drinks and alcoholic beverages; finally, a sedentary lifestyle can be a risk factor, because this means that we do not burn the calories we consume, but do store them.
  • Diseases: Certain diseases may cause obesity, such as Cushing’s syndrome, while others may decrease your ability to perform physical activity, such as arthritis.
  • Medications: There are some medications that could result in weight gain, such as steroids, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, among others; however, this can be counteracted with exercise and a balanced diet.
  • Among others.
It’s important to check this list and reflect on whether you’re a person with multiple risk factors, in which case, you should take the appropriate steps to prevent them from causing health problems.

How is it diagnosed?

Since obesity is a disease which usually results in several complications, it is essential that we get a diagnosis in a timely manner, which will be made after measuring the patient’s body mass index, or BMI. A BMI of 25-29.9 will be considered overweight, while one above 30 will be categorized as obesity.
Another aspect that is considered is the waist circumference of the patient, since health problems usually begin, for men, when it is greater than 40 inches; for women, this number is smaller, and should be less than 35 inches.

If left untreated, or uncontrolled, obesity can cause patients to face more health problems, increasing the severity of the situation, for example:
  • Heart disease and strokes
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Some types of cancer
  • Problems of the digestive system, such as hepatitis, heartburn, etc.
  • Sleep apnea
  • Osteoarthritis
  • More severe cases of COVID-19
All these complications can lead to serious consequences, or even death, highlighting the importance of preventing obesity, and of controlling it and treating it as soon as possible.

3 habits to prevent obesity

The good news about obesity is that it depends largely on how much we take care of our own health, and like many other health problems, obesity can be prevented.
First, it is extremely important to maintain a healthy weight according to your age and height, which you will achieve through a balanced diet with more fruits and vegetables, and fewer fats and carbohydrates. Likewise, it is important to prioritize water consumption (preferably 6-8 glasses a day) and reduce your consumption of soft drinks, juices, and alcohol.
On the other hand, it is essential to stay active with simple exercises like walking, jogging, running, etc., so you can get rid of all the calories you consume. The recommended time is 30 minutes a day for adults, and 1 hour a day for children and teens.
Last but not least, consider visiting your doctor regularly to monitor your weight and BMI, in order to be able to act in time if you are over your ideal weight.
