Let me tell you a little bit about it.
Like many of you, I am an immigrant. I arrived to the United States in December 1983, with my ex-husband and my five-year-old daughter. Then, within a few months, my second daughter was born prematurely. From that moment, I had access to the US Health System.
Due to the delicate conditions with which my daughter was born. Her weight was 1 pound 6 ounces. She endured a series of surgeries and seemingly endless treatments over 6 months without leaving a hospital. That generated expenses that were impossible to cover. Now I feel blessed because she is a very active part of our family.
My vast knowledge of the US health system began with this personal experience. I have personally worked through many different types of health coverage, from group coverage to individual coverage to Medicaid while at the same time, working through many aspects of Social Security.
At the age of 15 my niece was diagnosed with a disease of the digestive system called Crohn’s Disease. For three years, my sister’s family managed through treatments, hospitalizations, transfusions, and other medical services. Having the right health care coverage gave them not only the necessary medical care, but peace of mind and now my niece enjoys a happy, healthy life.
One of the most complicated issues that I have experienced was when my mother fell ill and did not have health insurance. I made sure that she always received the necessary medical care and services; however, as I was legally responsible, the hospital admissions resulted in serious financial obligations with six months of care costing around $200,000.
All of these experiences have given me the desire to help the community understand the health care system and provide people with options that fit their needs and budget.
